New England Clubs Take Two Titles at Atlantic Super Regional

New England clubs returned from the Atlantic Super Regional this weekend with two regional championships, a runner-up finish in each of two other divisions, and a pair of third-place results.

New London County ran through the Division IV men’s bracket without conceding a point. The side opened with a 95–0 win over Happy Valley Barbarians on Saturday, then closed out the tournament with an 86–0 victory over Western Suburbs in Sunday’s final. Division IV does not advance to a national championship, which makes the regional crown the highest title available to the club. They earned it the hard way: 181 points scored, none allowed. The club moves up to Division III next season — a change set before the tournament, and one the scoreline does nothing to argue against.

Portland Women did the same on the Division III women’s side. They handled York/Lancaster Thorns 52–7 in Saturday’s semifinal and beat Frederick Women’s Rugby 38–5 in the final. Like D4 men, the D3 women’s bracket ends at the regional level, so this is the top prize the division offers.

Portland Rugby Men came within one match of a third New England title. They got past Raleigh 31–19 in Saturday’s Division II semifinal, but ran into North Bay Rugby in Sunday’s final and fell 51–17. North Bay had advanced through their own bracket on the strength of a 36–5 dismantling of Buffalo and carried that form into the final.

Providence RFC finished third in Division III men. The side dropped its semifinal to Syracuse Chargers 34–15, then beat Severn River 33–17 in Sunday’s consolation. Providence WRFC finished third in Division II women on the same line — a semifinal loss to New Haven, followed by a 38–17 consolation win over the Severn River Honey Badgers.

Fellow New Englanders from New Haven Women (Empire seeds) advanced to the final, nearly clinching the title in a tight match that ended in overtime and their opponents from Phoenixville one try up.

Congratulations to the players, coaches, and supporters who made the trip to Niagara and represented New England rugby this weekend.
