NERFU is excited to announce the signing of head coaches for the Nor’Easters. Former NERFU Secretary, Jeff Sperling, will coach the men’s teams and Thomas Grant of the New England Free Jacks will coach the women’s sides. The Nor’Easters are the inaugural union-wide invitational teams of NERFU which will debut in a series of matches in July against the Canadian Classics.
Grant brings a high degree of professionalism to the team having worked for both the New England Free Jacks, the region’s first professional rugby team, and Otago Rugby Football Union, another team in New Zealand.
Sperling rejoins NERFU with extensive experience having coached several college clubs including Curry, Wheaton, Boston, and Brown as well as senior adult teams for Providence and the Rhode Island Selects team.
Both head coaches will be supported by a cohort of volunteer assistant coaches.
Players are still encouraged to register to join the team at the NERFU website, www.nerfu.rugby/nerfu-vs-canada. The tentative training schedules include Sundays in person and Wednesday evening virtual meetings. Men begin Sunday, June 25 at Pine Banks in Malden, MA and Women July 2 at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Quincy, MA.
