NERFU is pleased to announce the inaugural Training and Development Summit to be held at Nichols College in Dudley, Mass. August 8 to the 10th. This three day workshop will include USA Rugby certifications in Coaching (levels 1 & 2), Refereeing (levels 1 & 2), and Strength & Conditioning.
‘More better rugby’ starts with getting resources to the volunteers who make our game possible. Space is limited, so we strongly encourage you to register early.
Participants can choose from any combination of two Level 1 courses – to be held Saturday and Sunday respectively, or they may register for a single Level 2 course which is held over the course of both days. On Friday participants will enjoy a check-in welcome and may participate in a group golfing session and/or a networking meeting for college coaches. Watch this space for more programming developments.
About the Courses
Level 1 Coach Course
The Level 1 Coach Course (formerly L200) focuses on player welfare and the technical skills to play safely – specifically the tackle and the scrum. The course requires coaches to demonstrate effective coaching techniques, taught in the course including teaching through games, technical skill development through progressions, and collaborative coaching.
This course is suitable for all experience levels and will likely comprise a mix of veteran players/coaches and those new to the game – all benefitting from a free exchange of ideas/experience.
Level 2 Coach Course
The Level 2 Coaching Certification is the next step for those who have already completed Level 1. The certification progresses towards advanced coaching skills used in athlete development and program building. This course is much more involved than the Level 1 with respect to pre-coursework, the in-person clinic, and post-coursework.
The objective of the certification is for coaches to increase their ability to coach technical skills to achieve strategic and tactical outcomes. Coaches will be able to use the coaching process, key factor analysis, and functional role analysis to achieve specific short and medium term goals for their teams.
Level 1 Referee Course
Introduction to officiating in a safe, competent and enjoyable way! This course is for people who wish to become Match Officials in local age-grade competitions and senior Rugby.
On successful completion of the course a match official will be able to demonstrate basic officiating skills based on appropriate theoretical knowledge and evidence of preparation and planning, and be able to officiate aspects of the game in a modified context.
Level 2 Referee Course
The Level 2 Referee Course is for any referee that has completed their Level 1 course and been a referee for at least one season. In this course you will explore further topics such as positioning, advantage, materiality and other techniques to advance as a referee.
Level 1 Strength & Conditioning (Adult) Course
The World Rugby Level 1 Strength and Conditioning course is designed to provide basic knowledge and understanding of strength and conditioning and a foundation of practical skills. The course covers Long Term Player Development Pathway, Functional screening, Anatomical Adaptation, Demands of the game, Principles of training, Speed and intermittent sprint endurance, Periodization and Recovery.
It is intended for all coaches, referees, players, administrators, parents, and others who are involved with rugby. Participants do not need to have previous experience in Strength & Conditioning as this course primarily centers around preparing athletes to perform and recover.
